The new “Natural” certification
A lot of people ask the question, “what’s the difference between natural and organic?” You see more and more these days products that have the word “natural” somewhere on them. I am not going to go down the list because there are too many out there but just because the word “natural” is in the product name…doesn’t mean the ingredients come from all-natural sources. Now in order for something to be certified organic and have that pretty little green or black seal that says USDA Organic, it has to go through something like 3 years of transition from non-certified to certified organic. AND only agriculure can be certifited USDA Organic. I looked up the National Organic Program to try and get some facts to post here…but holy crap there was a TON of info and I got intimidated so I clicked out of the site. (Such a wuss, I know!) But I did find a quick n dirty on Wikipedia (don’t ya just love those guys!) and you can read about the organic certificatio process without your brain exploding. If you’re still confused after reading this…I don’t think there is much more I can do for you. Soo good luck.
Now the reason for this post is to alert all of you ladies out there that want beauty products that are safe for you and the environment. I have pretty much given up on wearing makeup because a) I don’t like makeup b) I’ve never learned how to apply makeup and 3) I just have NO freaking clue what is in that stuff and that scares me. So - now for the good news! The Natural Products Association has come out with a seal that in order for companies to put on their beauty products they must ensure that at least 95% of their ingredients come from all natural sources. Burt’s Bees, Weleda and Aubrey Organics are some of the first companies to be approved for this seal. I’m probably still not going to wear makeup but at least now I can buy my lotions, shampoos, conditioners, etc and know that these products aren’t going to damage the environment and the companies that make these products are aware and doing what they can to protect Mama Earth. YAHOO!
